Planá Chateau
History of the building
Planá Chateau is located on the western edge of the town of Planá in the Tachov district. The complex began to emerge in the 13th century as a Gothic castle, and its first documented owner was Dobrohost of Planá in the mid-14th century. After the property passed to Jindřich of Elsterberk in the 15th century, the castle began to be architecturally expanded and rebuilt into a three-winged layout, which remained in the possession of Aleš of Žeberk and his descendants until the mid-16th century. In the 16th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Schlick family, and especially under Mořic and Kašpar Schlick, the original castle structure was rebuilt into a representative Renaissance chateau. After 1665, when the manor was purchased by the Sinzendorfs, another phase of reconstruction took place in the Baroque style, affecting the facades and interiors of the complex. After 1822, the Nostitz family (Nostitz-Rhieneck) took over the manor. In the first half of the 19th century, Classicist and Empire-style modifications were carried out on the chateau, especially on the northeastern two-story wing. After nationalization in 1948, the chateau was used by the Border Guard as barracks until 1990. After 1990, individual parts and buildings of the chateau complex were sold to various owners, although Countess Mathilda Nostitzová tried to get the chateau back in restitution. This inappropriate and incomprehensible fragmentation of the ownership structure of the chateau complex was probably the main reason why the complex began to be neglected and irrepressibly dilapidated. The chateau complex in Planá is a significant monument because it documents the development of architectural styles from Gothic, through Renaissance and Baroque to Empire. It is connected with important noble families - the Schlicks, Sinzendorfs and Nostitzs, and we are convinced that it has the potential to return to the cultural and social life of the region. We purchased the property in 2017, but a few months later the chateau was hit by a fire caused by vandalism. The fire completely destroyed the roof trusses and the roof of the western wing of the chateau. Since then, rescue and restoration work has been carried out on individual buildings of the chateau complex, also with the support of various subsidy programs.
